Organization: Academy for Development and Education of Minorities (ADAM)

The Academy for Development and Education of Minorities (ADAM) was founded by a group of young Somaliland minority students in early 2010 in Hargeisa. It is the only academy set up by a group of minority intellectuals in Somaliland to work on the development of minority communities focusing educational development through advocacy, awareness raising and promotion of schooling initiatives.  The organization is a non-profit, non-governmental and non-political voluntary organization that works for its people to develop and prosper in Somaliland. The organization is officially registered in Somaliland by the Ministry of National Planning and Coordination as a local NGO.

ADAM was created and mandated to advocate for the minority communities in Somaliland to fully enjoy their rights similarly to the other Somaliland citizens. The organization endeavors to eradicate persistent, stereotypical problems against minority communities, such as ethnic-based discriminations that lead these communities to socially, economically, politically and educationally marginalize from the rest of the communities and sometimes deprived them from accessing their basic human rights. Hence, the organization is created to empower minority communities through raising awareness, advocacy and formal schooling systems so that they can be able to get improved educationally, socially, economically, politically and even spiritually and accessing legal rights.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders (MoJ, judges, prosecutors, other service providers, etc.)
  • Help clients to understand and navigate plural legal systems
  • Responsible for case management, case review, and case follow up
  • Supervise and mentor community-based paralegals (justice promoters)
  • Responsible for reporting and documentation
  • Conduct field visits and monitoring of community-based paralegals (justice promoters)
  • Conduct rights awareness and legal empowerment sessions
  • Assist with the planning and programming of trainings and activities
  • Day to day coordination with field staff for execution of activities
  • Intermediate justice and legal assistance and possible court representation

Essential Qualifications:

  • University degree in law
  • At least 2 years experience in legal service provision or community engagement
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience coordinating with volunteers and/or community organizations
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with minority communities
  • A member of the minority community
  • Experience engaging with the justice sector and/or civil society in Somaliland
  • Demonstrated understanding of the rule of law in preventing and protecting vulnerable members of the community
  • Knowledge and familiarity with informal justice and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms; and specialized experience in land rights, SGBV laws and IDP Rights
